History

History

The Goa College of Art was founded in 1972, by the Kala Academy for Goa Daman & Diu. It was taken over by the Government of Goa and came under the administrative control of the Department of Education on 1st June 1983. The college is presently under the Directorate of Technical Education, Porvorim. It is affiliated to the Goa University and is located atop the picturesque Altinho hillock within its own spacious campus.

Having completed 43 years as an institution, the college has turned out a large number of creative professionals to fulfill the demands of both academia and industry, thus contributing greatly to the artistic landscape within and outside the state of Goa.

The college has experienced many years of training students in the finer details of art and design. It has always encouraged a number of art related activities among students, having organized outdoor trips and competitions. It has regularly conducted study tours and visits to important places, noted for their art and culture. The college has invited several experts from within and outside the state to conduct workshops and demonstrations for the benefit of students.

Over the years, the college has promoted outreach programmes like ‘Field Projects’ and industry ‘commissioned work’ to develop professionalism among budding artists. It has continuously supported cultural and academic activity by creating the necessary infrastructure for such events.

The college Exhibition and Kala Utsav have been annual events to help explore and encourage talent and creativity among its students. The Cultural Committee has also been initiating and organizing various activities and programmes regularly through its Photo and Sketch Clubs.
