Padma Shri awardee Suresh G Amonkar attends 2016 Exhibition

For the students of Goa College of Art, AltinhoPanaji, efforts that go into classroom projects and studios received an outlet with the annual art exhibition held at the college campus. Right from doodles, sketches and sculptures, to audio-visuals, documentaries and photographs, this year's edition has a little something for everyone to see.

"Visitors always want to know what's new in the art industry in Goa. An event like this not only keeps them updated but also allows people the opportunity to see various genres at a glance" the principal at the Goa College of Art, Mahesh Vengurlekar told TOI.

He further added that the works presented are different expressions of students which are manifested in their art. "It's like poetry. They gather the society's reaction to issues and also channel their own understanding of society into their artwork," he said.

Padma Shri awardee Suresh G Amonkar, a Goan educationist and writer, was invited for the college's annual day function on Wednesday, and was given a tour of the exhibition.

In his address, Amonkar urged the students to immerse themselves in whatever they do, irrespective of the rewards.

"In the field of art, the goal should not be to achieve name and fame. It is essential to have knowledge of art history, too. Pure dedication and perseverance are the key to success in any field," he said.

Stencil-art and dhokra art were two new additions to the exhibition this year, Shwetash Naik, chairman of the college's student union informed TOI.

"This is probably the only place in Goa where students showcase their art, free of cost. The audio-visual capsules presented at this year's edition are of a very high standard, and the socio-economic topics behind them are also hard-hitting." he added.

The artworks are on display till March 23.
